Olive wood set of drawers

On Returning from delivering a large piece of furniture to a client in Barcelona, I visited a friend's organic olive plantation in Catalonia. While I was there he offered me some recently felled olive trees. Despite it's beauty olive wood is rarely used in furniture making: the trees become hollow inside as they mature, which means that the dimensions of the usable timber are small. This piece was made by cutting the olive wood into saw cut veneers to stretch them as far as possible. The centre handle recess is formed around a naturally occurring shape in the timber. Holly, used in the stand, is known for its whiteness and lack of figure, which allows the incredible olive wood to stand out.
